I have been corresponding with an inmate named Rob who went inside at a young age and is currently serving a very long sentence in London, OH. He feels that he has missed out on a lot of things in life and is open to a new way of looking at things. He crossed paths with Dale years ago but is now at a different facility in Ohio.
In one of his last letters he writes…
So this new found out look and attitude is something I’ve desired all along and never really knew it until I read about it and had a little of it explained to me by you and Dale. There are times when that alone has brought me to a new level of happiness. Just knowing that there is a new way to live and experience things feels like I am on the way to getting closer to life, if that makes any sense.
I was overcome with gratitude when I read this. To think that someone facing these incredible circumstances can choose again is inspiring.
Later on in the same letter he begins to share what he would do if he were released. He talks about traveling, hitting up national parks, picking up hitchhikers, cooking for homeless people, and getting it all on film.
He then writes…
I would mainly focus on everything I was doing after the fact. All the good I will be putting into the world and all the crazy fun stuff I get into in between. The point I would want to get across would be that nobody is all bad, we all have good in us and people are far from the worst thing they have ever done.
He shares so honestly in his letter about what he wants, yet underneath it all is a desire to teach only love.
We all have the power of decision in our minds to overcome our circumstances.
In this world you need not have tribulation because I have overcome the world. ¹¹That is why you should be of good cheer. (ACIM, T-4.I.13:10-11)
